These gardens are examples of sustainable alternatives to the typical American lawn. One features native prairie dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis) and ephemeral spring wildflowers. The other is planted with ivory sedge (Carex eburnean) and Pennsylvania sedge (Carex pensylvanica). The sedges stay green all winter and are mowed once in spring.
