Reading Group: Soil: The Story of a Black Mother's Garden

In Soil: The Story of a Black Mother’s Garden, poet and scholar Camille T. Dungy shares her experiences trying to diversify her garden in the predominately white community of Fort Collins, Colorado. Dungy explores how the various plants she grows in her garden become a metaphor for how homogeneity threatens the future of our planet. Her writing invites understanding of the relationship between peoples of the African diaspora and the land on which they live, and the concept that the soil beneath their feet is where they find home. Participants are encouraged to read the selected book prior to the discussion. Books are not supplied but are available at Schumacher Library, partner libraries, and the Madison Public Library system. Ages 16 and up with an adult This discussion will be held at Steenbock Library on Wednesday, March 20, 6:30-8 p.m. Instructors: Eva Stefanski, Horticultural Librarian at Olbrich Botanical Gardens; Marian Farrior, Restoration Work Party Manager at UW Arboretum; Karen Dunn, Librarian at Steenbock Library
