Olbrich Gardens Expansion Project
Phase 1: Learning Center & Greenhouse

Rendering of the facade of the new learning center, located near the main entrance to the outdoor gardens
As part of Olbrich's Rooted & Growing Capital Campaign, the Gardens will soon undergo a major addition to facilities with the construction of the first dedicated education space in Olbrich's history, along with the construction of an all-new production greenhouse.
If you'd like to keep up to date and track the status of this ongoing project, please visit the listing on the City of Madison Engineering website.
The new learning center will allow our wide variety of educational programming to better acommodate learners of all ages, interests, abilities, and backgrounds. The new greenhouse will be more space and energy efficient than the current structure, and will drastically increase our capacity for growing plant material for the gardens, for plant sales, and for special events.
The Olbrich Botanical Society and the City of Madison Parks Division (which jointly own and operate the Gardens) have partnered with Minneapolis architecture firm Meyer, Scherer, Rockcastle, Ltd. (MSR Design) to provide professional architectural/engineering design services for the project.
Estimated Project Timeline
Planning and Design: 2017
Construction Start Date: Estimated to be mid to late 2018
Completion Date: Estimated to be fall 2019
Public Works Contract: TBD
LEED Goals
The design goal is to achieve a LEED Certification of SILVER or higher, with a substantial focus on renewable energy use and energy saving features.
Public Meeting: Phase 1 Schematic design (Oct. 18, 2017)
A public meeting was held in October of 2017 for MSR Design to present the detailed schematic design for the Phase 1 structures (Learning Center and Greenhouse) and for the public to provide input and ask questions of the architects. You can view the presentation from that meeting here:

2013 Facilities Master Plan
In 2013, the public was invited to attend a series of community meetings to help inform the development of a master schematic plan for Olbrich Botanical Gardens’ public buildings. At the time, Olbrich worked with a different architectural firm, HGA Architects and Engineers of Milwaukee, to evaluate its building space needs.
Olbrich asked for input from neighbors, visitors, members, users, and other stakeholders. A series of five public meetings were held between January 15, 2013 and May 20, 2013, the records and results of which are posted below for reference.
