Bolz
Conservatory Exhibit: Chocolate - The Bitter and The Sweet
Jan. 9 - March 28 Open 10 am - 4 pm daily
Follow the alluring smell of chocolate into Olbrich's Bolz Conservatory for
a decadent exhibit! Learn about one of the world's favorite flavors
from its history and origin (in Mexico and Central America) to the current
problems of cocoa plantations. Admission to the exhibit is $1.

Program: Children of the Rainforest - Thai Classical Dance Group

Be transported to the exotic land of golden pavilions and tropical gardens
with the colorful costumes and delightful performances of the Thai Classical
Dance Group of Chicago. Tickets cost $3 for adults and $2 for children

Garden Design January 15, Thursday 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
The shade plant palette is much more expansive than many people realize.
Shade opens up entirely different garden uses and sensations that balance
sun inspired areas. Olbrich's Director of Education Ed Lyon will
address different types of shade gardens, cultural requirements, altering
soils to accommodate pH, design elements, and maintenance issues. The
cost is $12 for the general public, and $10 for Olbrich members.

Garden for All Seasons - Winter Walk January 17,
Saturday 9 - 11 a.m.
Take a look at the gardens in the winter. Olbrich's Director of
Horticulture Jeff Epping leads a walk through the gardens giving his
perspective on design elements and plant materials that make Olbrich a
four-season garden. See the gardens as they sparkle with frost and
enjoy their spectacular beauty at a time when you may not normally think to
visit a botanic garden! The cost is $12 for the general public, and
$10 for Olbrich members.

for Gardeners January 21, Wednesday 6 - 8:30 p.m.
Are you new to gardening and intimidated by the jargon? Never fear!
This lecture provides an introduction to botany, the study of plants, that
will make plants easier to understand. Director of Education, Ed Lyon
simplifies the science for you. The cost is $12 for the public, and
$10 for Olbrich Botanical Society members.

of the World Luncheon Series: English Gardens January
26, Monday Noon - 1
Come dine on English cuisine as you take a visual tour through some of
England's greatest gardens. The cost for this presentation is $25 for
the general public, and $20 for Olbrich members, and includes lunch.
Children’s
Education Program: Nighttime
in the Jungle - Music of the Rainforest Jan.
28 Weds. 6:30 – 8 pm
Children
will make their own drums, and their own music as they learn about the music
and cultures of the rainforest. Children
take a flashlight tour of the Bolz Conservatory, and explore Olbrich’s own
rainforest after dark. This
class is for children ages 5 and older. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
The cost is $10 per child for the general public, and $8 per child
for Olbrich Botanical Society members.
Adults are free! Registration is required.

As your landscape design matures, you may find more use for shade-loving
plants. Fortunately, there are many from which to chose.
Olbrich's Director of Education Ed Lyon will introduce you to plant material
including trees, shrubs, and perennials. The cost is $12 for the
general public, and $10 for Olbrich members.

Program: Intensely Chocolate Lecture and Tasting
January 31, Saturday 1 - 3 p.m.
Mmmm . . . the sweet decadence of chocolate beckons! Learn about the
history and processing of one of the world's favorite desserts, and then
sample gourmet chocolates. UW-Madison Professor Jim Nienhuis will
speak about chocolate's history, botany, and the domestication and
processing of cocoa based on his experience working for M&M and Mars in
Bahia, Brazil. Then, sample gourmet chocolates provided by Orange Tree
Imports. The cost is $7 for the general public, and $5 for Olbrich
Botanical Society members.

Program: Build
a Trough January 31, Saturday 1 - 3 p.m.
Learn
how to make an versatile container that looks like antique stone! In
this workshop you'll learn what
materials are needed, what tools to use, how to make the molds, and how to
give your trough an 'authentic' look. Each
person will make their own trough and begin to learn the various plants that
are perfect for these containers. The
cost is $62 for the general public, and $50 for Olbrich members. The
fee includes all supplies and the NARGS
Handbook on Troughs
and A Rock Garden
Handbook for Beginners.

Ornamental Plants from Seed January 31, Saturday 9 - 11
a.m.
There are many reasons to start your plants from seed including cost, pride,
control, and being able to get your hands in the soil before spring! Learn
the basics of producing healthy plants from seed with Olbrich's Director of
Horticulture Jeff Epping in this hands-on workshop with take-home materials.
The cost is $22 for the general public, and $18 for Olbrich Botanical
Society members.
