Tram Driver

POSITION SUMMARY

During the spring, summer, and fall, work as a member of the Tram Driver Team which is responsible for assisting visitors on and off Olbrich’s electric tram, driving the tram, performing daily maintenance of the tram, and working with Olbrich’s Maintenance Staff to ensure long-term maintenance of the tram.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Greet visitors and help them on and off the tram. 
  2. Assist visitors in wheel chairs on and off the tram, ensuring that the wheel chair is strapped securely in place while the tram is in motion.
  3. Drive the tram from stop to stop on a defined route around the Gardens.
  4. Ensure that the pre-recorded educational message plays for riders while the tram is moving from stop to stop.
  5. Inspect the tram at the beginning of each shift to make sure it is clean and in good operating order; report problems to supervisor and/or Maintenance Staff.
  6. Clean and inspect the tram at the end of each shift to make sure it is clean and in good operating order; report problems to supervisor and/or Maintenance Staff.
  7. Perform regular maintenance to ensure tram stays in good operating order.
  8. Work with Olbrich Maintenance Staff to perform long-term maintenance.
  9. Work with Tram Driver Team members to ensure that all shifts are properly staffed.



QUALIFICATIONS

Tram Drivers must be at least 18 years of age;

Possess a valid driver’s license and auto insurance;

Demonstrate good driving skills;

Have a pleasant outgoing personality and enjoy interacting with visitors;

Be able to work outside in all weather conditions;

Be willing to work as part of a team to cover all tram shifts which are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on the following days:

Weekends from April 19 – May 19

Daily May 20 through August 31

Weekends in September and October



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Experience driving cars, golf carts, and/or busses.

Excellent customer service skills.

Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance.

Physical ability to help riders on and off the tram.

Physical ability to help visitors in wheel chairs on and off the tram.

Experience working as part of a team.

 

HOURS & COMPENSATION

This limited term position is available April 19 – October 31 for up to 28 hours per week and pays $11/hour.  No benefits are included.

Olbrich Botanical Gardens, owned and operated by the City of Madison with support from the nonprofit Olbrich Botanical Society, features 16 acres of outdoor specialty gardens, a 10,000 square foot tropical conservatory, gift shop, meeting rooms, and horticultural library.  Olbrich Gardens has an annual visitorship of 250,000 and is a destination tourist attraction.
